How To Ensure That You Get A Good Marine Fiberglass Repair
Marine fiberglass suppliers and repairers will sell you the materials you need to carry out a wide variety of repairs, or even do the job for you. Most of the repairs are carried out on small boats, but the same companies will usually tackle just about any kind of fiberglass repair work. The techniques are basically the same, so why turn down money when there is work to be had? Automobiles are not going to disappear any time soon, and there are always examples in need of repair.
If you have a boat which is in need of repair, the first choice you need to make is whether to tackle the job yourself, or hand it over to a professional. In the vast majority of cases, handing it over to a professional is going to be the only option. If it needs an actual structural repair, it will need work with fiberglass resin, and this can be extremely hazardous unless you have the right safety equipment. Unless you are actually skilled in boat repair, you will not have either the necessary skills or the necessary equipment.
Fiberglass is a hazardous material, because it is exactly what the name would suggest. It is a mass of extremely thin particles of glass. Glass is not a material which should be absorbed into the human body, and if particles do get under the skin they can be very irritating. Even more serious, working with fiberglass without breathing apparatus can lead to minute particles being breathed in to the lungs. It is essential to wear the appropriate safety gloves, overalls, and a respirator. If you don't have these, leave the job to someone who does.
Marine fiberglass handlers are not difficult to find, especially when you use the Internet. However, there is always the not inconsiderable problem of transporting your boat to where it can be repaired. Even if you have a suitable vehicle all ready to go, you will still want to find someone relatively local. It is even more important to find someone conscientious, as the job will need to be done thoroughly. This applies just as much to cases where there is no structural damage, but where a gel coat needs to be replaced.
It is easy to replace a gel coat without taking any care over the preparation. This may look like a job done initially, but it will not take long for the truth to emerge. If you apply a new coat without first ensuring that any previous deposits of wax or oil are removed, the new coat will be able to set or stick properly. The result will be patchy, and part of the boat surface may still be exposed to the elements. Make sure that you find someone who will give you an exact breakdown of the work to be carried out before the start. There are plenty of boating enthusiasts who are genuinely helpful, and enjoy working with marine fiberglass.
